The FA have rejected Jose Mourinho's appeal against a one-match stadium ban and a £50,000 fine for comments made in the wake of their defeat to Southampton.

The Chelsea boss was fuming after his side were denied the penalty and hit out at referee Robert Madley in his post-match interview after the official booked Radamel Falcao for diving in the area.

He told the BBC: “… it was a big penalty for us.

“Not small, not doubtful, big, huge, and the referee is 10 or 15 metres away and doesn’t give the penalty and gives a free kick against us. I comment to the fourth official and I agree completely with what (he) told me.

“(He) told me “the referee is 10 metres away, he is in the best position so for sure he had the right decision.” And at that time (he) calmed me because I believe in him.

“In the end of the game, I come to the dressing-room, he was right the referee was 10 metres away, but it was a penalty. Be honest with us and give us what you have to give, and it’s a big penalty.”(FA emphasis in written reasons for sanction)

Mourinho was found guilty of the FA for his critical comments, which angered him given Arsene Wenger was not charged for calling Mike Dean 'weak and naïve' and appealed the sanctions imposed on him. However, the appeal board have rejected it.

An FA statement read: "An Appeal Board has dismissed the appeal from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in relation to a decision made by an Independent Regulatory Commission.

"At the original commission hearing, Mr Mourinho was given a suspended one-match stadium ban and fined £50,000 after he admitted a breach of FA Rules in relation to post-match media comments made following the game against Southampton on Saturday 3 October 2015.

"The Appeal Board has upheld the original sanction and therefore it remains that Mr Mourinho’s suspended stadium ban will be immediately invoked should he be found by an Independent Regulatory Commission to have committed a further breach of FA Rule E3 for any comment or statement to or through the media before 13 October 2016."
