QPR are ready to make an audacious swoop for Jermain Defoe as the answer to their striker problems.
Hoops hope the Tottenham forward’s move to MLS club Toronto gets the green light so they can immediately borrow him back until the American season starts in March.
A favourite of Rs boss Harry Redknapp when in charge at White Hart Lane, Defoe’s two-month capture ticks a whole heap of boxes.
It alleviates concerns in the final third where Charlie Austin has been the lone Ranger in every sense, hitting almost half the 26 QPR goals in 24 matches including Wednesday’s winner against Doncaster.
The loan would also allow Defoe to get fully match fit before he joins up with former Tottenham and Rs defender Ryan Nelson, now in charge at Toronto.
In the past, Redknapp reckoned Defoe’s wages were a stumbling block, but for two months and without the worry of a long contract, it would provide the immediate fix.
Assistant boss Kevin Bond hinted Hoops were keen to get a tried and tested striker like Defoe rather than gamble on a foreign import.
He said: “I think in an ideal world, Harry wouldn’t want to take a chance. You’d like to bring someone in you know could do the job.
“Quite often if you bring people in from abroad that you don’t know it’s more of a risk, but before the end of the window we’ll hopefully get something done.”
