CHELSEA legend Ron 'Chopper' Harris has come out in favour of a move away from Stamford Bridge for the good of the club.

Harris, who has played more times on the famous turf than anyone else, welcomed a move by the Blues to buy back the pitch and stands of the ground from 15,000 Chelsea Pitch Owners.

He said: “I spent 21 happy years there, but whatever decision the club comes up with I'm happy. Obviously they might want a bigger capacity, and if that's the case I'll go along with that.”

The bid for Chelsea Pitch Owners' shares is seen as a precursor to Chelsea selling up their home of 106 years and moving to an as yet un-named new site.

Harris, who played a record 795 times for the Blues, is employed by Chelsea as an after dinner speaker at the ground.

He said the club needed a bigger ground to compete at the highest level: “If you look at bigger clubs like Barcelona and Man United – if Chelsea want to be up there, it would be nice if they had a bigger stadium.

"Look at Arsenal, since the move there haven't been any complaints there.”
