Euro 2016 kicks off this Friday in Paris, but before all the fun starts its time to enter your fantasy football team - if you haven't already.

Midfielders are often the hardest players to select. They don't score all the goals and they don't get the defensive accolades.

With points on offer for goals and assists we've selected an elite group of midfielders to consider building your team around. These players have an eye for goal and that killer pass.

Don't bother picking the Claude Makelele of today for your team because he won't score you any points!

Take a look at the five we've highlighted who are sure to be heading the assist charts whilst chipping in with goals themselves in your Mirror Football fantasy side.

David Silva

David Silva had a difficult season, but there is no doubting his ability.

Spain seem to be going under the radar for this summer's competition, but they are going for the hat-trick – and let's not forget what country the Champions League and Europa League are in.

Silva will pick up a lot of points just from the amount of chances he creates during the tournament and if he is close to the box he is capable of finding the net.

Don't be surprised if 'Silva assist' trends at least once during the tournament.

Kevin De Bruyne

Nobody seems to be talking about the impact that Kevin De Bruyne could have on EURO 2016.

Despite a number of injuries during his first season at Manchester City, he was impressive – scoring 16 times and picking up 12 assists.

In a Belgium side full of stars, De Bruyne is probably one of the most exciting players, but he never seems to get the plaudits he deserves.

With Belgium expected to go far, Euro 2016 could be the stage for De Bruyne to finally get some well deserved recognition.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling's first season at Manchester City was rather indifferent. At times you could see why Manuel Pellegrini paid so much for him, but other times you questioned the price tag.

A break from club football could benefit Sterling and in a team that many are expected big things from, he could shine.

If Sterling can link-up with his other attacking players he could pick up a lot of assists during the European Championships.

Not to forget, he does know where the back of the net is.

Marek Hamsik

Marek Hamsik has had an impressive season with Napoli

This is suggestion may surprise because nobody will be expecting Slovakia to do much in the tournament.

But they could surprise many and even advance from the Group B.

Hamsik is the vice-captain of the Slovakian national team and is one of their most creative players.

He scored nine goals for Napoli last season and also picked up 11 assists.

Hamsik will be available for a bargain price and should definitely be considered for the group stages.

Xherdan Shaqiri

A lot will be expected from the Stoke City player during Euro 2016.

In the 2014 World Cup he showed just how good he can be on the international stage – and he will be hoping to repeat that this summer.

Switzerland have a favourable group and are the tournament dark horse for many.

Shaqiri obviously has an eye for goal and will also create plenty of chances for his team-mates.
