Brentford will face Exeter at St James's Park in the EFL Cup first round after the draw was done this afternoon.

The Bees last faced the Grecians in League One in March 2012 as a Saido Berahino double gave the west Londoners all three points.

Last season's corresponding fixture was a débâcle as former head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen made 11 changes from the side that drew the opening day fixture with Ipswich, playing a host of young players.

The strategy backfired as Brentford were hammered 4-0 by Oxford United, then of League Two.

The Bees, in their selections in recent years, have made it plain that this is not a competition they prioritise.

Mark Warburton made a host of changes for the 6-6 draw at Dagenham & Redbridge, the joint highest scoring League Cup match along with Reading 5-7 Arsenal, before making changes for the second round tie against Fulham where they were beaten 1-0.

Former manager Uwe Rosler made a number of changes when Brentford, then in League One, travelled to Championship side Derby. Once again, the Bees were on the receiving end of a heavy defeat as the Rams won 5-0.

The tie will be played in the week beginning August 8.
