QPR striker Jay Bothroyd thought for a fleeting second there was a mathematical chance of salvation – but that was before Chronicle sport told him it was all over.

The forward was unaware for at least half an hour after the final whistle that a final day fixture between Wigan and Aston Villa gives one of them at least a point, and out of the clutches of both Bothroyd (pic) and his team-mates.

In fact, both Rangers and Reading take the Premier League plunge as a result of the 0-0 draw, with the forward admitting it’s hard on Rs great supporters.

He said: “The fans been great all season, and they were again at Reading. But the table doesn’t lie and it hasn’t been good enough.

“We got in good areas, and it was an end-to-end game, but four wins all season says it all, and it’s disappointing but we’ve got to pick ourselves up for the last three games and finish on as high a note as we can.”
