Mark Warburton called on his Brentford players not to respect reputations following their 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham today.

Moses Odubajo rose from the bench to save a point for the Bees, who played 75 minutes with 10 men after Tony Craig was sent off in the incident which led to the Paul Caddis’ penalty for the Blues.

While thrilled with his side’s character to battle back for a point, Bees manager Warburton felt the nervous first 10 minutes still betrayed a tendency to treat some of the so called ‘big boys’ of the division with too much respect.

He said: “I thought there was a bit of edginess about us the first 10 minutes. I’m not saying it is a lack of self-belief, but what we have to avoid in this league is playing the badge and playing the club name.

"We are not playing the Birmingham City or Blackburn of the Premier League. We are, no disrespect to those clubs, playing their team of today, and we have to deal with that.

Penalty shout: Jake Bidwell had an appeal turned down

“I’m delighted though as the boys showed tremendous character and application there to come back. Straight after the sending off I thought we were very good for 10 minutes and kept the ball well, and then we had a sloppy 15 minutes where we got drawn in to the emotion of the situation of having a player off and the penalty.

"We weren’t getting too many of the decisions at the time either, and it was a great save by Butts to stop us going 2-0 down. But at half-time we re-grouped and I thought we played very well second half. We showed our quality on the ball, and by the end of the game there was only one team in it.”

Warburton admitted he had not had a clear view of the penalty incident which threatened to de-rail the hosts’ day. However, penalty or not, he felt the spot-kick should have been sufficient punishment.

“I could not really see if it was a penalty, but I thought we had two defenders either side, so I don’t think it was a sending off and we will definitely consider an appeal,” he said.

“And I’ve got to say Jake Bidwell had a great shout for a penalty in the second half, where the leg comes up and nothing is given, so the lads feel very hard done by.”
