Life as a Sheringham is a two-edge sword for Dons striker, Charlie.

Sure, you have the advice of a dad who played for England, Tottenham, Manchester United and West Ham – but everyone makes the comparison as they probably did in the 0-0 draw with Mansfield on Saturday.

The 25-year-old returned to an AFC starting line-up for the first time since he missed a penalty in August, and eventually made way for Jack Midson deep into the second half.

Boss Neil Ardley was satisfied his Sheringham fitted into a revamped 4-4-2 set-up, although the man himself reckoned he did only ‘OK’ following rehab for a nasty ankle injury.

“If the manager says I did well, then all good, but it’s a shame I didn’t score,” said Sheringham.”

The striker has suffered two bad injuries since he got a proper league start with Bournemouth and admits his career has since been on partial hold.

“I got a move to Bournemouth but broke my foot – was out of the game 13 months,” he explained.

“They left behind me a bit and moved on to bigger and better things, and I had to start again.”

Since signing for AFC in August, dad Teddy has been a regular spectator at Kingsmeadow.

Does it heap pressure on his son?

“There’s two ways of looking at it. Of course I get the benefit of his experience – but there’s definitely a negative there as well,” Charlie said.

“He comes to as many games as he can, and I get his advice and take on things.

“There are always comparisons to be made, and people looking out for the name, blah, blah, blah – and I have to get used to it.

“I have to play as high as I can regardless of what my dad did and realise my potential.”
