Neil Ardley described it as one point closer to the 54 that guarantees League Two safety for Dons - but reckoned the 0-0 draw with Mansfield was ‘horrible’ to look at.

“First half when we were brave enough to pass it – I thought we could win,” said the manager.

“The second half to be fair to Mansfield saw them bigger and stronger and they said you’re now going to play our game – and we’ll do it better than you.

“And we got caught a little between two stools.”

The manager refused to blame a long list of injuries for a sterile match and was pleased George Francomb, playing out of position in the midfield centre, sorted the ‘ugly’ stuff as well as keeper Ross Worner who pulled off three vital saves towards the end.

Ardley added: “I told Ross well done back in the changing room.

“And we had players plugging gaps, so a point was about fair, but no mistake it was horrible to watch as a game.

“Last season it looked as if 50 points would be enough, but this time I think it will need 54.

“It’s such a tight league, I’m done with looking ahead, and the sooner we reach our target, the more we can talk about other things.”
