INTERIM Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo was pleased to see Roman Abramovich applauding his side at the weekend but insists he is not yet thinking about his long-term future at the club.

Di Matteo has been given the reins at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season and has exceeded expectations by guiding the Blues to the finals of the Champions League and FA Cup.

Club owner Abramovich (pictured) looked delighted as Di Matteo’s men thumped QPR 6-1 on Sunday and has been impressed with the progress the club has made under the leadership of the Italian.

But with Pep Guardiola due to stand down as manager of Barcelona this summer and Joachim Loew and Laurent Blanc also hovering, Di Matteo faces a fight for the permanent role.

“When you have good results, everybody connected to the club is very happy,” said Di Matteo. “ I’m pleased we had a smile on our boss [Abramovich] but I think everybody from the players to our supporters were pleased on Sunday.

“It [my future] is irrelevant. I am just focussing on Newcastle now. I think it’s important that I focus on the players, on the team, and when the time comes I’ll sit down and think about my holidays. The results are good so we are pleased with that and the players have been working hard, but we have to continue because we haven’t won anything yet.

“I’m very happy in my position at the moment to be leading this club until the end of the season and that’s the situation.”

Di Matteo will be looking to further boost his credentials by picking up three points when the Blues welcome Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge tomorrow night.
