AFC Wimbledon new-boy Kelle Roos is delighted to have given up ‘the day job.’

The 23-year-old goalkeeper who joined on loan from Derby on transfer deadline day has made a career out of collecting splinters in his back-side warming benches for the Rams since stepping up into league football in 2014.

He spent a whole season playing second fiddle to Lee Grant at Pride Park after being refused a loan move by the then Derby boss Steve McClaren.

So now such is the novelty of being actively involved in the Dons’ promotion push, to Roos it is not like working at all.

“It is the worst thing in the world being a substitute goalkeeper so I hate being on the bench,” he said.

“I say when I play it is my hobby and a very nice hobby and when I’m not playing it’s kind of a job. That’s the difference I think, so I’m happy to be here and to be playing.”

Hardly surprising then having waited so long, the former Dutch youth international is not about to complain about a programme which will see Dons take to the field five times in 14 days, starting with tomorrow’s visit of Oxford to Kingsmeadow.

While the bodies of others may be creaking under the strain, he is thrilled at getting into a rhythm of playing regularly.

“I am really happy about the schedule, he added. “

“Obviously for the lads on pitch it is a bit heavy on the legs whereas for me I kick a lot, but don’t run that much so I love playing games and can’t wait for the next one to do it again.”
