Dean Smith reckons Brentford are finally seeing the best of Romaine Sawyers after a tough start to life at Griffin Park.

The 25-year-old has been in stunning form in recent weeks and capped off a fine performance against Leeds United with a goal in a 2-0 victory at Griffin Park on Tuesday evening.

Sawyers has been the target of criticism over the season from some sections of support but he is finally showing the Championship why Smith was so keen to work with him again after signing him from Walsall in July.

And the Brentford boss believes that Sawyers is now playing with confidence and that is a big reason behind his recent form.

He said: "He's playing with confidence, I think it's a big thing with any player.

"I've had Romaine for a long time, I know how he ticks and he's been working hard on the training ground and what we've seen on the training ground is finally coming to fruition on the pitch.

"I'm not saying his performances early in the season weren't good, but he's starting to get to a level now that I know he can achieve and go even higher.
