Dean Smith is expecting Wigan Athletic to prove a tough test for his Brentford side when the two teams meet on Saturday afternoon.

The Latics triumphed 2-1 at Wolves on Tuesday night, while the Bees were 4-1 winners against Reading.

And Smith knows that Gary Caldwell's side boast strong players up front such as Adam Le Fondre and Will Grigg.

He said: “I've watched them play their last few games. They play very good football. I played against them with Walsall last season and we drew 0-0 at their place. They've got good players and have recruited really well.

“It'll be interesting to see who is up front, whether it's Adam Le Fondre or Will Grigg coming back – they tell me he's on fire.

“It'll be nice to see him as he came through the academy at Walsall when I was there. There was a lot made of him during the summer at the Euros.”

Smith also rebuffed 'rumours' that the Brentford defence were 'terrified' of the Northern Irishman.

He added with a smile: “I don't think the defence are terrified as they know him. He doesn't scare them too much as he's been in that dressing room with them.

“I know what a good lad he is and I've had him before. He's a really nice lad. I've come up against him a few times after he left Walsall.

“It'll be the first time I've come up against him as Brentford head coach. The players are looking forward to it as well.

“He didn't start in the week but came on and scored the winner. His goals record is very good but they've got a number of really good players in their ranks and we can't concentrate on one player.”
