Dean Smith paid tribute to his side after Brentford picked up their first league win of the season, with a 3-0 triumph at Bolton.

Yoann Barbet, Nico Yennaris and Ollie Watkins had their personal goal of the season competition at the Macron Stadium with all three goals set to feature in the shortlist.

And Smith was, naturally, delighted after the first three points of the campaign and the second half performance.

He said: “I thought the second half was really good. We didn't start the game well and Dan Bentley made a good save and hit the post.

“We weren't quick enough to get on the ball. Without being dominating, I thought some of our moves were very good and we've got a 3-0 win thanks to some world class goals.

“I'm hoping we'll start taking our better chances. It feels like a long time since we got that win. The performance was on a par with what we have been playing.”

Neil Taylor and Nico Yennaris

Barbet bounced back from a difficult game against Norwich in the Carabao Cup where he missed a penalty and was in France last night as his mother underwent heart surgery.

Smith added: “The keeper has made some good saves and it took a world class free kick from Yoann Barbet.

“I'm pleased for him. He missed a penalty on Tuesday and took a lot of stick. He had to fly back to France after his mother had heart surgery. Thankfully his mother is well and he's scored a goal for her.”

Yennaris and Watkins both scored fine goals and Smith found it difficult to pick a favourite.

Ollie Watkins celebrates his goal

He explained: “I didn't see the Nico Yennaris goal at the time as I was talking about a substitution.

“I've seen it back and a 30 yard strike it doesn't get any better than that. Even Ollie Watkins has cut inside and put it in the top bin. All three of them will be goal of the season candidates.”

Yennaris led the side after John Egan was forced off early with dizzyness and was superb, while Watkins also stood out.

“He was excellent. He was one who played on Tuesday night and would be the first to admit he's not played as well as he could have done. It's what we've come to expect from him,” Smith added.

“I'm sure Ollie will be putting in an argument for goal of the game. It was a professional performance. We didn't dominate the ball but we showed pace in the game when we broke.”
