Dean Smith was left disappointed after Brentford were beaten at home by Barnsley.

The Bees were second best throughout the afternoon and fell behind after a Yoann Barbet error handed Adam Armstrong a chance which he took, despite miscuing his shot.

And the Tykes secured victory when Sam Winnall tapped home after Ryan Kent's shot struck the post.

Smith said: “My emotions are a bit of frustration and disappointment. We controlled the first half without creating many chances.

“Scott got in on one and the keeper smothered it. We gave them a helping hand with the ball into our box and the lad miskicked it and it went in.”

Scott Hogan was off the pace during the contest and his frustration clearly showed. Smith admitted the striker had an off-day but felt he wasn't given the required service.

He added: “I felt our decisions were poor at times on the ball. There were three or four opportunities to play Scotty in but we took an extra touch.

“That was the killer – we slowed it down. It was an off day for Scott and it's always tough when they take the lead.”

He went on: "I thought it was a timing issue in the first half. I felt we took a touch too many but sometimes he goes a bit too early. I'd be more worried if he wasn't getting chances. He never got the contact he'd have liked."

Smith refused to blame the defeat on the banning of Alan McCormack for five games as he was injured and remained silent on the issue until the club received the full explanation from the governing body.

He explained: “He wasn't going to be available for this game. It's one that we haven't had the written reasons for so it's difficult to make a comment until then.”
