Dean Smith felt Brentford were denied a stonewall penalty as the Bees were held by Derby County.

Romaine Sawyers was brought down by Ikechi Anya in the second half and the head coach was up in arms, believing it should have been a spot kick.

Brentford probably edged the 90 minutes but a 0-0 draw was fair with the shot-shy Rams never really testing Daniel Bentley in the Bees' goal.

Smith said: “It was a very disciplined performance. We know they've got very good players here.

“We wanted more intensity with our closing without the ball and restricted them to long range efforts.

“We didn't have as much as the ball as we did normally. That was part of the plan as we felt we could hurt them on the counter.

"I'm bitterly disappointed as we should have had a stonewall penalty in the second half.

“One of the officials must see it because I could see it. If I can see it then they should. They're professional. Hopefully they'll even themselves out over the season.”

The Bees had the better chances over the course of the game with Scott Carson making an excellent save from John Egan in the first half with Tom Ince being the Rams' only threat, forcing Bentley into a good save and missing a golden opportunity to steal the points in second half stoppage time.

Smith added: “We always felt there was goals in this team. I don't like 0-0s and I was pleased with the performance today.

“We've had some good chances. Romaine hit the post. The keeper made a good save from Egan's header and we should have had the penalty.

“I thought we created the better chances before we gave one away that Yoann cleared at the far post.”
