David Button understands that Brentford fans would rather he'd signed for any club other than Fulham and would like them to remember his contribution to the club.

The former Tottenham trainee made the move down the Thames in July with the Bees picking up a seven figure transfer fee.

The 27-year-old has come in for criticism on social media but Button insisted he retains a strong respect for the Brentford supporters.

Asked by GetWestLondon about the departure and his message to the Bees fans, Button said: “It's football. Probably in their eyes it'd have been nicer for me to move on to a different club. It is what it is.

“Hopefully they remember the good times and what I did for the club. I've got a great respect for the fans and for the way they treated me while I was there. I know it's not going to be a popular decision.”

Button admitted that he felt the time was right to move on after three years at the club where, if available, he played – he missed three league games through suspension and one league game through injury during his time at Griffin Park.

“I had a great three years at Brentford but felt it was time for a change and the opportunity to come here arose and it was something that interested me.

“I'm thankful for everything that happened at Brentford but fully focused on Fulham now.

“I'm toying between promotion and the play-offs (as to the highlight). Promotion was my first season there. It was a great experience for me and the team.”
