Ashley Cole appears to have paid the price for being frozen out by Jose Mourinho for much of the season after being left out of England’s World Cup squad.

It is understood that national team boss Roy Hodgson called the Chelsea left-back on Sunday evening to inform him he was one of the players not going to Brazil.

Cole, whose club future has yet to be decided, had hoped a recent strong display at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League would persuade Hodgson to pick him.

Instead, Southampton's Luke Shaw gets the nod alongside Everton's Leighton Baines and Cole is not even on the standby list.

The former Arsenal defender has 107 caps for his country, but his 13-year international career is over - the player having tweeted that he intends to now retire.

He made his international debut against Albania in 2001 and has been an ever-present in the England side since.

The 33-year-old has started every tournament game since making his finals bow in the 2002 World Cup against Sweden.
