Only three European clubs have fielded a more expensive array of talent than Chelsea this season.

The Blues paid an average transfer fee of £15.4m (€ 21.9m) for the players that they have fielded so far this season according to research by the Football Observatory.

That's the third highest in the country behind Manchester City, £19.9m (€ 28.3m), and Manchester United, £19.3m (€27.4m).

It's also the fifth highest average in Europe with Real Madrid coming top with an average of £21.6m (€30.7m).

Barcelona player cost the club £15m (€21.3m), the average Paris St-Germain player £19m (€27.1m), the average Bayern Munich player £10.8m (EURO 15.4m) and the average Juventus player £10.1m (€14.4m).

The average Premier League footballer to have played this season cost his club £6.3m (€ 9m).

That's more than in any of the other five major leagues.

Players in the Spanish top flight set their clubs back an average of £3.1m each (€4.4m). In Italy's Serie A that average is £2.7m (€3.8m), in Germany's Bundesliga it's £2.1m (€3m) and in France's Ligue 1 it's £1.7m (€ 2.4m).
