Ray Wilkins believes Chelsea are making a mistake letting John Terry leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

The 35-year-old club captain announced that the Blues are not going to offer him a new deal and he plans to play on and is expected to move overseas.

And Wilkins, who played for Chelsea between 1973 and 1979 and was the Blues' assistant manager between 1998 and 2000 as well as between 2008 and 2010, believes his performances have been worthy of a new deal.

He told Sky Sports: “I’m slightly flabbergasted. His performances are at a very similar level to what they were last season where he played every game.

“The Premier League is not going as well as it should be, but it’s not only on the field that John has the qualities that every club desires. It’s off the field.

"He leads the club, he leads the players in the dressing room wonderfully well. He always has done and I’m sure until he leaves in the summer he still will do.

"I think he will be a great loss to Chelsea Football Club. I think there’s another year left in John."

Terry, who has made 696 appearances for the club to date, is determined to do his best for the rest of the season at Stamford Bridge.
