John Swift is enjoying the role Lee Carsley has given him to play during his loan spell at Brentford.

The Chelsea man has been playing in a wider role than he had done at Chelsea with Alan Judge being used in a free-role and Ryan Woods on the other flank.

With Toumani Diagouraga and Alan McCormack behind him, Swift feels the midfield combination are working well, both offensively and defensively.

He said: “I played in the central midfield role but I'd say I was a box-to-box midfielder but, probably like any player, I enjoyed going forward more.

“With Toumani and Macca doing the defensive jobs it gives me license to go forward more, which I enjoy.

“Playing with Judgey and Woodsy, who enjoy going forward as well.

“Hopefully we can play the same football we've been playing as I think it's working and take the football we've been playing into the next game.”

Don't mess with me: Alan McCormack has a disagreement with Clint Hill

McCormack is renowned for his physical style and is a player opponents love to hate, while Diagouraga is strong on the ball.

The pair, though, give Swift the confidence he needs to push forward more knowing the duo have his back.

He added: “I think every team needs a player like Macca. He's a great player on the ball but he likes to get his foot in.

“Toums likes to get on the ball and also does a defensive job really well.

“As an attacking player; when you've got those players behind you it gives you more confidence to go forward as you know you've got security at the back.

“I think they've been great and haven't had a bad game when I've been here.”

October player of the month Judge has been the talisman in recent weeks, setting up or scoring seven of the Bees' eight goals, and Woods has been wowed by the Irishman's talents.

He explained: “You have to adapt to every player in the team but he's a great player to play with. You can make a run and he'll find you.

“He can win a game and open doors and to be in the same three alongside him. To just make runs and he'll find you. He's deserved his award. He's had a great month and hopefully he can push on again.”

Impressed: Ryan Woods

Woods has impressed since signing for Brentford from Shrewsbury, who were promoted from League Two last season, and Swift hadn't realised the 'ginger Pirlo' had come from a side lower down the football pyramid, such is his talent.

The midfielder explained: “He's on the other side to me so I hardly get to pass it to him. I hadn't realised he's come from a lower team.

“He's fit straight into the team and is a great player to play with. I'm sure Judgey likes playing with him. He works hard going forward and back and he'll get his goal soon.”
