Diego Costa is the man Chelsea have been waiting for since last season, says Jose Mourinho.

But the Blues' Spanish goalscorer, who opened his Stamford Bridge account with a brace in Tuesday night's final warm-up against Real Sociedad, is worth more than just his goals says Mourinho.

"I expect him to work hard for the team," said the Blues' boss.

"He is not just about goals, it's about his defensive ability, his ambition and mentality.

“This is the player that we have waited for since last season. This is the player why we didn't buy during the winter transfer window - we were waiting for him, now we have him and hopefully everything goes well. He looks adapted to the team and our style of play.

“Hopefully he will do well In what is a difficult position - a striker in the Premier League."

Mourinho said Costa, who set Chelsea back £32m from Atletico Madrid in the summer, will prove he is a bargain – while Chelsea have tended to specialise in expensive flops up front.

"I think we have a bargain in Costa as the market is crazy,” he said. “The prices in the transfer market are very high and for strikers even more.

"So for a Spanish league winner and Champions League finalist, and at only 25, we consider the price we got for him was very much in our favour."
