Jose Mourinho has disputed David Luiz' claim that this has been a poor season for Chelsea.

The Blues' Brazilian defender, speaking in the aftermath of Chelsea's exit from the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid, said this had been a 's**t season' for the club.

But Mourinho has struck back – insisting there is nothing to be ashamed about in the campaign wash-up.

Passion: Chelsea's David Luiz

“I don't think it is a bad season - I think it is a transitional season,” said Mourinho.

“For a transitional season to arrive where we did I think it is very good.

“For a transitional season, to fight for the title until the last moment and to go to the Champions League semi final I think it is a good step.

“If you compare with the season before - Chelsea lost the title in November. When Manchester United was champions, Chelsea was 20 points behind.

“In the Champions League, Chelsea was the first team in history to be knocked out in the group phase after being champions.

“So it is a big step in terms of fight for the title and fight for the Champions League.

“So I think a good step.”

Chelsea face Norwich City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, in their penultimate match of the season.
