Hillingdon Borough captain Tom Kirk believes his team can really kick on next season after making good progress this term, writes Nick Purves.

Borough ended their Spartan South Midlands campaign with a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Colney Heath on Saturday.

But despite finishing on a bum note, Kirk will be relaxing this summer and reflecting on what has been a largely positive year at Boro.

“We lost because they were more clinical with their finishing, simple as that,” he said after the defeat to Colney.

“It was the last game of the season, we were trying to play football and that has opened up the space for them to get in behind us. Although we have improved this season we’re still disappointed with the number of goals we’ve conceded.

"We want to push on again and hopefully with a bigger squad and more players available, we’ll be able to do that.”

Heath took the lead when Dave Parkinson’s initial effort was beaten away by Matt Faley and rebounding in off Boro’s Benjamin Dunkwu for an own goal.

Hillingdon should have been level when a cross from Robert Gradwell found Chris Martin-Thomas a matter of yards out, but with an open goal he managed to place the ball in the exact spot where the keeper was placed.

They paid for that miss when they were then hit with two goals before half time. On both occasions, right winger Parkinson got free behind Gary Edwards and delivered two expertly-taken finishes. Parkinson completed his hat-trick six minutes after half time when once again, he turned inside Edwards and curled a precise finish into the corner.

Hillingdon rallied and pulled a goal back when an Edwards free kick was flicked on by Kirk to Dunkwu, who delivered a low cross that was turned in by Martin-Thomas.

Elsewhere in the division, Harefield United signed off with a 5-1 defeat at home to Holmer Green. Andy Hiblin got the consolation strike for the Hares.
