Massimo Luongo believes he can load the bullets for QPR hitman Charlie Austin at Loftus Road this season.

The 22-year-old Australian international has made a steady start to life in west London following his £2million summer switch from Swindon Town.

He has played in an advanced attacking midfield role for the R’s and is already developing a good understanding with the club’s primary goalscorer.

At times during the summer it appeared the duo would not be linking up together at Rangers but Luongo is delighted to be able to continue building his flourishing relationship with the forward.

He said: “I’m normally more of a midfielder but I’ve been pushed further up the pitch as a No 10 at times and I find it quite easy to play with him (Austin).

“He makes my job a lot easier. I know what his strengths are and hopefully I can compliment him. We work well together.

Charlie Austin's goals for QPR in the Premier League

“He’s one of the players I’ve known the longest and he can get us out of a ditch at any time whether that is taking hold of the ball or scoring a good goal. He’s a handy player to have in the team.”

The Hoops were braced for a flurry of late bids for the Englishman on transfer deadline day but received no firm offers to see him stay at Loftus Road.

Leicester City had seen a bid of £12million rejected by the R’s as Chris Ramsey held out for his full £15million asking price.

Newcastle, Tottenham and even Manchester United had been touted as possible destinations for the forward who proved himself at Premier League level last season.

Austin banged in 18 goals in a struggling team as QPR were relegated and he has started the new campaign in fine form by hitting four goals in five games.

But unless a new contract is agreed with the striker, he will be free to leave for nothing in the summer and won’t be short of takers.
