Americans are celebrating their Independence Day today (July 4) and to join in the festivities, GetWestLondon has taken a look at Brentford's players from the United States.

In their history the Bees have three players from across the pond who have played for the USA at different levels of international football.

Jim Brown was the first American international to feature for the Bees, doing so in 1935.

Gerry Baker was the first player born in the US to feature for Brentford, joining on loan from Coventry.

The most recent American was Mike Grella, who spent the 2011/12 season at Griffin Park.

GetWestLondon has taken a more detailed look at the trio below.

Jim Brown (1934-36)

Brown was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland but moved to the United States to look for his father and started his career in New Jersey with the Newark Skeeters before crossing the Hudson to play for the New York and Brooklyn.

He joined Manchester United in 1932 and had two seasons with the Red Devils, where he scored 17 goals.

His pro-trade union stance alienated the club and he moved to Brentford for £300. His stance angered the Bees' management and he only made one first team appearance, but did score 53 goals in 74 games for the reserves, winning the London Challenge Cup.

He then moved to Tottenham Hotspur for £1,200 where he made four first team appearances before joining Guildford City.

After three years there where he scored 148 goals in 150 games, he returned to Brentford, scoring in an FA Cup game against Fulham.

He ended his career with stints at Clyde and Greenport United.

Brown also featured at the inaugural World Cup, which was won by Uruguay.

Gerry Baker (1969)

Baker had a brief spell with Brentford in 1969 when he joined on loan from Coventry.

He was born in New Rochelle, New York but moved to Scotland during World War Two.

Baker started out his career at Motherwell before moving to St Mirren and then to Manchester City.

He returned to Scotland in 1961 to join Hibernian but crossed the border again to sign for Ipswich where he scored 58 goals in 135 appearances.

Coventry came calling in 1967 and they loaned him to the Bees in 1969. Baker made eight appearances for the club, scoring twice.

After his time at the Sky Blues came to an end in 1970 Baker had spells at Margate, Nuneaton Borough, Bedworth Untied and Worcester City.

He made seven appearances for the USA, scoring on two occasions. His brother Joe Baker represented Scotland.

Mike Grella (2011-12)

Mike Grella

The 30-year-old had a season at Brentford in the 2011/12 season under Uwe Rosler.

Grella was born in Glen Cove, New York and started his career with the Long Island Rough Riders and Cary RailHawks U23s.

Leeds United signed him 2009 and he made 29 appearances for the Yorkshire side, while having loan spells at Carlisle United and Swindon Town.

Brentford signed him in 2011 and, while he failed to score in the league, he did bag four against Bournemouth in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy as it was called then.

Grella joined Bury after leaving Brentford and then had a subsequent spell at Scunthorpe.

He tried his hand in Denmark at Viborg FF before crossing the pond again and joining the Carolina RailHawks before joining New York Red Bulls, who coincidentally play in the state of New Jersey, in 2015.

Grella also represented the USA U18 and U20 teams.
