Tom Field knows he needs to deliver on a consistent basis if he is to become Jake Bidwell's long-term replacement at Brentford.

The former Bees captain departed Griffin Park for QPR earlier this month and the young left back, who deputised for Bidwell against Fulham in April, has been playing in his stead.

And Field, who has played the most of any Brentford player this pre-season, believes he has the ability to shine at Championship level.

He said: “I need to keep playing well and be consistent. That was Jake's main game in being consistent. I think I'm good enough to play.

“Even when he was here I always felt there'd be an opening. It was tough as he was captain and so consistent. I reckon I could have competed with him this year as well.

“I want to get the shirt and be in that dressing to play week in, week out. I don't see why I can't do that.”

Field spent his down time putting his feet up, although he started fitness work 10 days into his break, and now feels like a first-team player, especially after joining the tour to Germany.

He said: “The squad have been very welcoming. I felt I was part of the squad from the Germany trip.

“They told me not to worry if I make mistakes and it's made me fearless. The main message from the gaffer is play your game and you'll get better.

“It's the tempo that is the main difference between senior and U21 football. You receive the ball and they're on you within seconds. You need to have a picture of the pitch in your head all the time. Everything is a step up.”
