John Swift believes Brentford are yet to see the best of him as he finds his feet on the left side of the Bees' attacking midfield.

The 20-year-old played as a central midfielder as he grew up at Chelsea but has been played on the right at Rotherham and in the number 10 role at Swindon.

But Swift has been selected on the left at Brentford and he has been adjusting to his position on the flank.

He explained: “It's quite hard. I played in the 10 for Swindon, on the right for Rotherham and at Chelsea I was a central midfielder.

“I enjoy the attacking role and can slip in quite easily. The hardest thing is to keep that position and stay in the team week in, week out.

He added: “With my performances, I think I can do a lot more than what I'm doing at the moment. I'm still getting used to the position. Jake Bidwell is helping me out a lot.

“I think when I came, my defensive side was lacking. I've done a lot of work on the training pitch.

“I think I've been a lot better defensively recently but I don't want that to take away from what I'm doing going forward.”

Swift has chipped in with four goals so far this season and he is keen to reach double figures for the season. But, he'd happily settle for less if he was setting them up instead.

He explained: “We're all trying our best to score but we've been unlucky. Lasse is doing his best up top and we all have to chip in. We work on it in training. Hopefully it'll come off in a game soon.

Swift went on: “My target was to get at least 10 by the end of the season. It's looking possible but I'll do my best.

“I think there's still a lot to come from me. Four goals wasn't what I was looking for but as a midfielder I need assists as well.

“I think if I was involved in 17-18 goals, maybe not scoring them, then I'd be pleased. Hopefully I'll get more in the future.”
