Brentford will face Bolton again next season after the Trotters' spell in League One was over after just 12 months as they claimed the runners up spot.

The two sides have met each other 40 times over the course of the two clubs' histories. Brentford have had the better of the exchanges, winning 16 times. There have been 10 draws and Bolton have claimed victory on 14 occasions.

When the Bees were first promoted to the Championship in 2014, it was the first league meeting since the Bees won promotion to the second tier in 1992.

Both clubs have had contrasting fortunes since then with the Lancashire side reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Cup, beating Atletico Madrid on aggregate in the process, while the Bees bounced between the third and fourth tiers of English football.

Below, GetWestLondon takes a look at previous meetings between the two sides.

Last meeting: Brentford 3-1 Bolton (April 5 2016)

A first half blitz saw the Bees pick up three points over the Trotters, seeing them move further clear of relegation danger.

Nico Yennaris, who scored his first goal for the club against Nottingham Forest three days earlier, found the net again on 17 minutes.

Lasse Vibe

Lasse Vibe, who had been called a not as good Andy Carroll by the away fans, then scored twice in the space of 10 minutes.

Zach Clough pulled a goal back but it was never going to be enough as the Lancashire side ended the season rooted to the bottom of the table.

First meeting: Bolton 3-2 Brentford (September 23 1933)

Although Charlie Fletcher and Dai Hopkins found the net for the west Londoners their first trip to Lancashire ended in defeat with the Trotters claiming a 3-2 victory.

They did have a better time of things at Griffin Park as Jack Holliday bagged a brace and Billy Scott also scored in a 3-1 win.

Memorable meeting: Bolton 1-2 Brentford (April 20 1992)

Brentford were in the automatic promotion chase when they travelled to the old Burnden Park in April that year.

The Bees had endured a torrid March, losing four and drawing two to seemingly see their promotin dreams fade.

After a 0-0 draw with Reading on April 1, Phil Holder challenged his side to win their last six games and clinch promotion.

Terry Evans

The Bees had already beaten Shrewsbury, Hull and Darlington when they made the trip to Lancashire.

And they made it four wins on the spin thanks to Terry Evans and an own goal in a 2-1 victory.

The following game saw the Bees thrash Fulham by four goals to nil before clinching promotion against Peterborough on May 2.
