Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill admitted he was close to calling up Brentford striker Scott Hogan to his squad for their pre-Euro 2016 friendly with Holland.

Roy Keane went to watch the Bees frontman at Huddersfield last weekend as Hogan scored twice as the Terriers were thrashed by five goals to one.

The striker has endured a difficult two seasons at Brentford, suffering two anterior cruciate ligament injuries.

However, he returned in March and, incredibly, has scored seven goals in 163 minutes.

It was this form that led to Keane taking a look at the striker, although the Boys in Green decided to stick with what they had with Hogan coy over his international future.

"He (Keane) was very impressed with Hogan,” O'Neill said: “I thought about bringing him in, but I left it at this minute.”
