Alan Judge is set to return to training with the Brentford first team on Monday, if the medical team sanction the move.
Dean Smith believes that the Irishman is ready to make another step on his return to action after suffering the broken leg against Ipswich in April 2016.
He required further surgery earlier this year and has worked hard at his rehabilitation.
Smith said: “Alan Judge is good and he's doing a lot more ball work now. I'll be having a meeting with the medical staff about pushing to the next part of his progression.
“He's not with us but my thoughts are he'll start with us on Monday and go from there.”
No timeframe has been put on Judge returning to first team action and Smith is keen for the 2015/16 player of the season to let his body take its course.
He explained: “It'd be a big step but it's one I think he's ready for and one I'll have a discussion with the medical staff.
“He's keen to get with us as soon as possible. We won't be pushing him and it'll be a case of he will get there as his body allows.”
