John Egan knows that, if things go to plan, he could be in line for the best 12 months of his career.

The twice-capped Ireland international is looking to help Brentford win promotion to the Premier League as well as help the Boys in Green to the World Cup in Russia next year.

And Egan made no bones about the fact that his dream season is to achieve both of those things.

He said: “In an ideal world, winning promotion with Brentford and getting to the World Cup is an ideal situation.

“But in football you can never look too far ahead, you have to focus on what’s coming up and the next game.

“If I keep my form up like I did last season, play well and play to a high standard then everything else comes with it.

“That’s all I’ve got to do – to focus on playing well and winning games for Brentford and see where that takes me.”

First though, is a trip to Sheffield United in what will be a tough opener for the Bees, given that the Blades won League One last season, topping 100 points.

Egan added: “They have been flirting with promotion from League One for so many years and they’ve finally got it.

“They are going to be confident and they will have a feel good factor about them. They are going to be really up for it and we’ll have to out there and fight fire with fire.

“We’re expecting it to be a really tough game. I played against them in League One so I know what they are about. They will fancy their chances after coming up.”
