Former Gunnersbury schoolboy Tommy Cameron has landed a football scholarship at an American University after playing at an annual showcase in Florida.

Having completed his A-Levels earlier this year, the midfielder, who has played for North Greenford United, flew out this week to begin his collegiate career at Lubbock University in Texas.

There, Cameron will start pre-season training this month and play for the Lubbock men’s team, while also studying for a sports science degree.

He said: “I chose Lubbock after meeting with their soccer coach. They made me an offer that reduced the tuition fees and my living costs by over 50 per cent. It has all happened so fast, but I can't wait to get out there. This is an amazing opportunity to combine my degree and take my game to the next level.”

Cameron won his place through a sports showcase, held each year by InTuition, giving youngsters the opportunity to play live in front of US college coaches and getting a taste of life on campus.

College sport often provides a route into the professional game in the US, with 11 of their 23-man World Cup squad having played in the college system. Places are now available for the 2015 showcase, and interested players should register online at:
