Brentford have recalled Jack O'Connell from his loan move at Rochdale in a move that surprised the League One promotion chasers and, it seems, the player himself.

The Bees signed the defender in February from Blackburn but allowed him to continue his loan spell with Dale.

However, the west Londoners have now decided to recall the 20-year-old from his spell at Spotland and he will now compete for a place at Griffin Park.

He marked the end of his spell at Rochdale with the winning goal against Yeovil in what was his 100th appearance for the Manchester club.

A clearly shocked O'Connell told Dale Player: “I want to play. That's the type of player I am. I'll be giving 100 per cent between now and the end of the season.

“I've made some good friends at Rochdale and they're a great bunch of lads.

“They can definitely win promotion if they stick together and perform to what they're capable of.”

O'Connell will go into the squad for Friday's meeting with Fulham.
