He may have opened his Brentford account on Saturday with a superb strike at Wolves – but Sullay Kaikai is not eyeing just goals during his stay with the Bees.

The Crystal Palace youngster arrived at Griffin Park with a good scoring pedigree from his previous loan spells, including 12 goals in 26 games at Shrewsbury last season.

But the winger, who also set up John Egan's equaliser at Aston Villa last week, is looking to improve his all-round game and not just add to his goals tally.

He said: “Finishing is something I work hard on, because when you get in those positions it needs to come natural. I only had one thing on my mind, and didn't have enough time to take a touch, so the best option was to shoot first time, and it came off.

“It's not just about the goals though, it's about my overall performance for team, defensively as well as going forward. I'm here to improve my all round game, and if the goals come too, then that's even better.”

Kaikai's goal gave Brentford hope after they had fallen behind to a double strike from Joao Teixeira, and for the last 20 minutes or so they piled the pressure on Wolves in search of an equaliser, but were, in the end, caught out by a breakaway sucker punch deep into injury time.

Palace debut: Kaikai in action against Southampton

Kaikai said: “Half time was a good tome to regroup and we came out hungry for the second half. We came into our own, but we were just unfortunate.

“We were going for it but left ourselves exposed, and they got the late goal to kill us off, but we were a bit unlucky that some of the big decisions didn't go our way.

“But the thing about this team is we never give up, and we'll take that into our next game, where we'll be looking to take all three points.”

Cup of joy: Kaikai took on Manchester United in the FA Cup when on loan at Cambridge

Kaikai, who has made just one senior appearance for Palace, has also enjoyed loan spells with Crawley and Cambridge United, but believes being at Brentford is a step up in his progression.

He added: “I've had lots of different loans in the past, but the Championship is a different level and a real step up. I'm working hard to adjust to this level though.”

Brentford will be looking to bounce back from the Wolves defeat at home to Reading tomorrow night.
