Dean Smith was delighted with how his Brentford side performed going forward in the 4-3 win at Oxford but knows they need to improve without the ball.

At times during the contest the Bees were devastating going forward, creating chances at will, with Florian Jozefzoon, Lasse Vibe, Reece Cole and Sergi Canos all getting on the scoresheet.

However, they looked vulnerable at the back on occasions with James Henry's brace in particularly galling. Marvin Johnson also scored from the spot after Luke Daniels was harshly adjudged to have brought down Kane Hemmings.

Smith said: “It was an entertaining game. Some of our passing and moving was very good. I was disappointed with the chances we gave them.

“The disappointing part of it is the goals we conceded. I thought at times we were a joy to watch on the ball.”

Pre-season is the time for trying new things and also ironing out any weaknesses and Smith will be working on those behind the scenes at Jersey Road.

He added: “I think it was our low defending. We gave the ball away cheaply for both their goals.

“The first was never a penalty. I've worked the lads very hard. If you're going to make mistakes, make them now. It allows us to review it and get things better.”
