Brentford forward Ollie Watkins sets such high standards that his goal at AFC Wimbledon didn't gloss over what he described as a disappointing performance.

The EFL young player of the year scored his first goal for the club on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup and will now be looking to take that prowess into the Championship.

But he wants his all-round game to be even better and he will have been working on the areas he was disappointed with.

He said: “I’m disappointed with my performance really, with some sloppy set pieces and not as tidy as I should be. So there’s something work on.

“I can’t beat myself up about it.

“I feel I am (a harsh critic). I know when I play well and I don’t need to be told when I’ve played well. Here, I’ve been a bit sloppy.

“I want to get better so you have to be harsh on yourself. We won the game but I didn’t think my performance was great.”

Watkins' ambitions are simple but daunting; be the best player in the world.

When asked about who his football idol is, he replied: “In this day and age, it would be Ronaldo. Obviously everyone wants to be the best player in the world but it’s highly unlikely!

“I like his mentality and that’s why I feel I am harsh on myself because I want to improve all the time.

“I feel I could have done better here but I can’t beat myself up. I can’t take the highs too high and the lows too low. I need to balance it out and go again on Saturday.”

Through the door: Ollie Watkins is a Bee

Watkins is likely to make his Griffin Park bow against Nottingham Forest, either from the start or from the bench, and he is relishing the prospect and will be looking to bring more positives and less negatives to the game.

The Brentford forward explained: “I’m expecting a good atmosphere at Griffin Park and I’m looking forward to it. I haven’t played a league game there yet and we’ll see what happens.

“Hopefully I’ll start but if not make an impact off the bench.”

He added: “I’ll have to watch what I did wrong back and try to bring more positives to the game, less negatives.

“As with last year, I feel the cherry on top would be getting promotion.”
