Yoann Barbet is impressed with Brentford's move for young French striker Neal Maupay.

The Bees completed a deal to bring the frontman to Griffin Park from Saint-Etienne, seeing off the advances of Brighton.

And fellow Frenchman Barbet has been aware of his career of some time after he impressed in the French equivalent of the FA Youth Cup.

The defender said: “He's a young player. He's 20. I know him a bit because he won the Coupe Gambardella, a cup in France for under 19s, when I was playing.

“He's four years younger than me and he was playing with the big teams. He knows a high level. He's played for Nice and Saint-Etienne.

“He had a really good season in the second division. I think it's a good signing for us. He'll run a lot and work hard. It's good to have this kind of player on our team.”

Barbet believes that Maupay and Brentford's other summer signings can help bridge the gap between the Bees and the rest of the top six.

He added: “The new signings can really help us as we have a lot of quality players so we'll have good players on the bench.

“It can make the difference to have a player at the same level. With a big squad. We can do big things.”
