Brentford co-director of football Rasmus Ankersen is still looking for new ideas but the upcoming season will be all about executing the strategy already in place.

The Bees overhauled how they went about their business two years ago and have finished in the top 10 of the Championship both times.

In this current climate, Brentford could never dream to outspend the likes of Aston Villa and Derby, who spent more last season than the Bees did in their entire history, but, as proven in the games at Griffin Park, they can beat them by out-thinking them.

The concern is other teams decide they want to adopt similar models to Brentford but Ankersen confirmed that the club are looking constantly at finding further marginal gains to maintain a competitive edge.

He said: “For us, it's a constant improvement. I spend quite a lot of time looking out of the football industry to look for new ideas that we can bring in.

“It's an ongoing process but I think we've got a concept now. Next season is about execution. It's not about bringing new ideas. It's about getting together and executing the strategy.”

Set pieces has been one area that Brentford have overhauled in the past two seasons and Ankersen has been looking into rugby as well as NFL to see if anything can be learned.

The Bees have also looked to business as they develop a culture that brings about togetherness in the squad.

Ankersen added: “We've looked at a bit into rugby and American Football with regards to set pieces.

“There are a lot of those situations in those sports and if there's anything we can take from that.

“We look into business and how they work including the culture and how to develop the culture you want and all those things are normal in other businesses but are uncommon in football.”
