Dean Smith believes the Republic of Ireland 'better be quick' to call up Brentford striker Scott Hogan as he also qualifies for England.

The Bees frontman has been deadly in front of goal in the past week, bagging five goals in three games.

Since returning from two anterior cruciate ligament injuries, Hogan has scored 13 goals in 15 games for the club.

Martin O'Neill, who names his squad today, has been monitoring the Bees frontman and even considered him as a Euro 2016 wildcard selection.

And the demands to put the call into Hogan, who qualifies through his grandparents, have grown louder by the goal.

Smith said: “There's been speculation and I'd be amazed if they're not looking at it. I think he qualifies for England as well as Ireland so whoever comes in better be quick.

“I'm very much of the opinion you don't waste grey matter on what might or might not happen. When it happens, then we'll talk about it then.”

The Bees head coach would be delighted if Hogan was called up to the Ireland squad after seeing Alan Judge make his debut earlier this year.

He added: “I think it's a big boost to get international recognition especially when you're plying your trade in the second level of a country.

“Alan Judge – it was a great honour for him last season. Any player that does that is a great honour and him being linked with the Republic of Ireland is great.”

Hogan has also been linked with moves away in the January transfer window, with Swansea being the latest club, but Smith is not thinking about 2017 just yet.

He explained: “It's September. We've got a lot of days until January. We've got a lot of games to play. I'm pleased the window has closed and we don't have to think about that.”
