Dean Smith admitted he got his selection wrong after Brentford drew 1-1 with Burton Albion.

Against a side that made little effort to go for a win and who put 11 men behind the ball at all times, the Bees head coach named the same side that lost 2-0 at Cardiff.

And it was a move that backfired as the west Londoners failed to break the Brewers down and were left frustrated.

It is rare for Smith to make changes before the hour mark but he did on this occasion; bringing on Sergi Canos and Josh McEachran for Nico Yennaris and Ryan Woods.

Florian Jozefzoon's free kick did give Brentford the lead but Ben Turner's header denied the Bees all three points and Smith was furious at the end.

He said: “It was a very poor performance – our poorest of the season. I look back and think I should have made changes.

“I thought the lads had earned credit to stay in the team but I thought we looked pedestrian in the first half.

“I was going to change it a half-time but I gave them a rocket and said you've got five minutes but I didn't see a change.

“I made the changes and Josh combined with Ollie and Sergi won the free kick. Flo scored and got us out of jail a bit.

“The next 15 were all right and Sergi and Yoann had good chances and in the last 15 minutes we were poor on the ball.”

Smith felt changes would have given his side more legs but felt that, given the ball was in play for 51 minutes at Cardiff, that there would be more energy.

“Just more legs. The ball was only in play for 51 minutes on Saturday. I didn't think changing it would help but looking back at it, I maybe should have made a couple of changes,” he added.

“There's an expectancy for us to turn up and beat Burton but it's not that easy. They've had four clean sheets away from home.

“We knew they'd sit behind the ball. They came here to frustrate us and frustrate us they did.”
