Dean Smith felt his Brentford side weren't good enough at wearing Burton down as they drew 1-1 against the defensive Brewers.

Nigel Clough admitted after the game that his side's style of play was their best chance of picking up a result and Burton made Brentford's life difficult all evening.

Much like the 1-1 draw with Derby, the Bees faced a side that put bodies behind the ball and made space in the final third very limited.

And, once again, Brentford found life difficult in opening up a resilient defence.

He said: “It's very difficult (when you face a side setting out to defend). You can look at the top teams in the world and they find it difficult when teams bank up against them and they have Lionel Messi in them.

“What you have to do is wear the opposition down and I don't think we were good enough at that.”

There were further comparisons to the draw with Derby in that the atmosphere grew impatient and Smith had tried to drum that into his squad before the game.

He added: “I said to the players before that, not being bad to Burton Albion but they don't travel in the numbers that Leeds do and create an atmosphere, and I told the players about creating an atmosphere and I don't think we troubled their goalkeeper.

“The only opportunities we created were when they lost the ball and we broke. We were slow on the ball and they got numbers back and made it difficult.”

Smith felt his side have players capable of unlocking defences but conceded it was an off night for the majority of his squad.

“We have to better than that as not many teams will go toe to toe with us football wise. Tonight wasn't the night we wanted,” he explained.

“I feel we have got clever players and that's what disappointed me tonight. Their touch and passing were a bit off but it was a collective off.

“I wanted to get more goalscorers and ball carriers. No disrespect to Woodsy but goalscoring isn't what he's renowned for although he scored against Leeds.

“I got Josh McEachran on the pitch and, after five minutes, I looked a bit of a genius after a few minutes.

“The manner of which they scored the goal. John Egan makes a great header out the box. Their lad comes inside and we should stop the cross or defend it better at the far post.

“There were two players in the six yard box ready to tap in if he'd knocked it back.”
