Brentford ended their league campaign in a highly creditable ninth position after a season that had fascinating highs and tremendous lows.

Alan Judge scooped the supporters and players' player of the season awards, while Sergi Canos was awarded goal of the season.

Both of those gongs were expected from the majority of the fanbase so, below, we are going to hand out alternative awards.

Signing of the season

Impressed: Ryan Woods

Ryan Woods has been virtually an ever present since joining the club and his form has been impressive in the final weeks of the season.

He may have made a mistake against Leeds on his debut but it was the only time he really put a foot wrong in a Brentford shirt.

He scored a goal of the season contender at Reading, his first for the club, but it wasn't even the goal of the day as the 'Ginger Pirlo' produced the ball for Sergi Canos to harness a bit of Paul Gascoigne and Dennis Bergkamp to fire in the wnner.

With a full pre-season behind him, Woods will become an even better player for the club next season.

The 'Best Message to Fans' award

Class: Jota

An easy decision and this award is handed to Jota for his wonderful letter to the Brentford fans after his loan move back to Eibar was confirmed.

An extract read: “Words can't describe the affection I have been shown by the supporters at Brentford.

“I want you to know that I have heard and felt every shout of encouragement and every word of support from the Griffin Park terraces.

“My children will grow up listening to 'Jota in the last minute' which I have saved forever in my heart as well as constantly in my head.”

A touch of class.

The 'What on earth is going on?!' award

Manager of the Month: Lee Carsley

This award has to go to the post-match press conference against Birmingham. Marinus Dijkhuizen had been sacked a day earlier with Lee Carsley taking charge.

The Irishman revealed he had no interest in taking the job and would, likely, be leaving the club once this stint was over.

It left fans scratching their heads, which continued after the Bees produced a limp performance in their 2-0 defeat to Derby.

The 'He said WHAT?!' award

Lasse Vibe and Matthew Connolly

Most times when I ask footballers how they get away from the game, they'll tend to say something along the lines of box sets, golf, spending time with the family or computer games.

Not Lasse Vibe, who successfully gained a Masters degree in finance at Copenhagen Business School.

He said in pre-season: “I am doing my masters thesis in finance and accounting. I'm turning in my paper in two months hopefully and travelling back to Copenhagen in two or three months to defend my thesis.

“Hopefully, I'll have a Masters degree in finance or accounting. It's taken me five years.

“I'm doing a leverage buyout, which is a private equity fund, buying a company, paying down the debt and selling it again. It's a Danish registered company. Hopefully I'm turning it in in September then going back to defend it.”

The 'Unluckiest Man of the Season' award

There are several candidates for this award, including Alan Judge and Andreas Bjelland after their long-term injuries.

But the recipient of this award is Lewis Macleod. The Scot has repeatedly suffered setback after setback which limited his playing time to just 10 minutes at Brighton in February.

He faces a big season next year as he bids to show the fans what he can do and shed the 'injury prone' label.

The 'Funniest Moment of the Season' award

There have been several fraught moments throughout the campaign but spare a thought for Bolton fans, who suffered relegation to League One.

That said, they accepted their impending relegation with gallows humour and the atmosphere they created at Griffin Park was the best there all season.

The songs they came out with were amusing and self-depreciating but the best one was their song for Lasse Vibe where they called him a rubbish Andy Carroll.

The Dane responded in the best way possible by scoring and his tweet after the game showed he took it all in the right spirit.

The 'Stat of the Season' award

This award goes to Scott Hogan after his sensation run of goals in a Brentford shirt.

The striker made seven appearances for the Bees after returning from two anterior cruciate ligament injuries.

He was on the pitch for 163 minutes and, in that time scored seven goals.

That works out at a goal every 23 minutes or so. Staggering.

Most improved player of the season

Nico Yennaris looked like he was going to be leaving the club after his contract expired in September, especially after he was left out for the 2-1 win over Preston, where the Bees' injury problems were at their worst.

However, after Lee Carsley replaced Marinus Dijkhuizen as head coach, the former Arsenal man was brought back into the side.

And, slowly but surely, he turned fans' perceptions around with his consistently good performances at right back in the absence of Maxime Colin.

He was rewarded with a new contract in February and went from strength to strength, especially when he was moved into the midfield position.

Yennaris ended the year having scored his first two goals for the club and has established himself as a key part of the first team squad going forward.

Player of the Season

Brentford's talisman Alan Judge. No explanation is really necessary as he was named in the top three players in the Championship.

Goal of the Season

Sergi Canos' strike against Reading. Again, no explanation is needed. Just watch the video again and enjoy.
