As Yogi Berra is alleged to have said, it's deja vu all over again as Brentford were made to pay for missed chances and a defensive lapse as Reading rescued a point they scarcely deserved.
The Bees were the dominant side and Josh Clarke fired them in front just after the 15 minute mark.
Royals defender Paul McShane was lucky not to have been sent off after bodychecking Ollie Watkins when already on a yellow card as the Berkshire side couldn't live with the former Exeter man.
The key moments came just after the hour mark as the superb Josh Clarke, who was a thorn in Reading's side all afternoon, played a delightful through ball to Florian Jozefzoon.
The Dutchman got five yards out then inexplicably put the ball wide and that moment cost the Bees as Reading won a penalty soon after as Rico Henry was deemed to have pushed Liam Moore.
Liam Kelly stepped up and drilled it high into the net past Dan Bentley and could have won it in second half stoppage time when Sone Aluko's long range effort struck the bar.
Below is how GetWestLondon reporter Tom Moore rated the Bees this afternoon.
Daniel Bentley – Made a superb save in the second half and his distribution continues to improve. 7
Josh Clarke – A superb performance from the right back as he terrorised the Royals all afternoon. 9
John Egan – Marshalled the defence well and kept Reading at bay in open play. 6
Andreas Bjelland – A surprise inclusion but gave a composed performance. 6
Rico Henry – Performed well but blotted his copybook by giving away the penalty. 5
Kamo Mokotjo – Reading couldn't get near the South African as he shrugged off their challenges with ease. 7
Ryan Woods – Produced some scintillating passes at times. 6
Romaine Sawyers – Some delightful flicks that set chances up but will feel he should have done better with his shooting opportunity. 6
Ollie Watkins – Reading could not stop him using legal means so resorted to fouling him when he had the ball. 8
Neal Maupay – While he didn't have a shooting opportunity, he gave McShane and Moore a torrid afternoon. 7
Florian Jozefzoon – He will feel he should have scored at least one this afternoon. A frustrating game for the Dutchman. 5
Nico Yennaris – Spreaded the play well. 6
Josh McEachran – Slotted back into the side well after his lay-off. 6
Theo Archibald – Not enough time to impress. N/A
