Wealdstone boss Gordon Bartlett won’t be rushed into making a decision on deals for Richard Jolly and Jamie Hand as the duo battle to prove their fitness.

Both players are training with the Conference South club with a view to signing deals but are desperately in need of match sharpness.

Monday night’s friendly fixture with Hendon looked to be the answer until a waterlogged pitch at Grosvenor Vale saw the match postponed.

Jolly, a firm favourite with Wealdstone supporters from his previous time at the club in particular is in need of game-time having come out of retirement.

He didn’t kick a ball for the whole of last season and boss Bartlett will be thinking carefully before offering terms to his old goal machine or former Luton midfielder Hand.

“It’s not something we’re going to rush into,” Bartlett said. “We’ve got a good squad at the moment and we need time to settle with one or two new people on board.

“Richard has trained with us for the last three sessions and has done well. It is just his match fitness that needs to be honed.

“He’s married now and settled and he feels he’s got the time to commit to it. We’d like to get the best out of both Richard and Jamie and we need a couple of friendlies to look at them.”

Wealdstone are one point above the relegation places following Saturday’s 1-1 stalemate with Maidenhead United, Dave Tarpey netting a late leveller for the visitors at the Vale.

A trip to promotion hopefuls Boreham Wood awaits this weekend and Bartlett admits the fixture list has not been kind to his boys in recent weeks.

“That’ll be four games on the bounce that we’ve played a top-six side and by all accounts they’re one of the best in the league,” he added. “I can’t deny that I was disappointed with our ball retention in the first half on Saturday but we got a point.”

Meanwhile, Enoch Showunmi could yet turn out for the Stones again.

The striker is hoping to land a spot in the Mansfield team and watched the Stags lose to Southend on Saturday, however no deal has been agreed yet.

Elsewhere, Conference Premier leaders Barnet, who beat Welling 3-2 at the weekend, host Wycombe Wanderers in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday at the Hive.
