Brentford picked up their first win in the league season as Yoann Barbet and Nico Yennaris had a goal of the season competition between them.

The Bees, after a shaky start to proceedings, saw John Egan forced off after 15 minutes and replaced by the Frenchman.

However, they started to take control and opened the scoring when Barbet struck a free kick into the top corner from the best part of 30 yards.

That strike settled the visitors and put fear into the home side, who went into the game without a win as well.

The Bees had chances to extend their lead before the break with Ben Alnwick making a string of fine saves.

It would need something special to beat him and Yennaris provided it, driving a thunderous effort into the top corner to double the lead.

And, in the closing stages, Ollie Watkins scored the least best goal of the game as he rifled the ball into the top corner from 20 yards.

Below are five talking points to emerge from the game.

Glorious goals

Ollie Watkins

Brentford fans have been debating which goal scored at Bolton was the best of the day and, after the frustrations of the last few weeks, it's a much more enjoyable discussion to have.

For me, Nico Yennaris' was the best of the lot with the midfielder drilling the ball home from 30 yards and it was one that Ben Alnwick would never have got to any day of the week.

Yoann Barbet's free kick was just behind him. There was one place the Frenchman could put that free kick for the ball to end up in the net and he put it precisely there.

Now, had Ollie Watkins' strike been the only goal of the game, I'd be waxing lyrical about how good a finish it was. But, for me, because of the distance, it was the third best of the game. That's not to say it wasn't a fine finish. In fact, you can vote in our poll below.

What was the best Brentford goal at Bolton?

About time too

Dean Smith

Brentford probably should have had a win earlier this season but it's a relief to put that first W in the bank.

There should still be a concern over the fact that that Bees missed the better chances but three points should, if everything goes to plan, breed confidence.

The squad have been saying for some time that somebody was going to be on the end of a heavy defeat.

They have also intimated that once the Bees are up and running then they will reel off some wins. They need to back that up against Derby.

It's also nice to not be writing the same thing this week with the Bees actually winning a game.

Nicely done Nico

Alex John-Baptiste looks to challenge Nico Yennaris

I was critical of Nico Yennaris' performance against Norwich but he was every bit the leader when John Egan went off with a head injury.

He was the heartbeat of the team at the Macron Stadium, driving his team-mates forward and getting in the ear when others needed it.

His passing was good and it was clear, even if he didn't always succeed, what he was trying to do.

Yennaris also capped off a fine performance with a brilliant long-range goal. For me, it was his most dominant display during his time at the club.

It shouldn't be a surprise though to see someone who works so hard at their game bounce back from a bad day at the office in dramatic style.

His regular detractors will certainly be either eating humble pie or, in the case of certain people, be upset this evening and long may that continue.

Keeping optimism in perspective

Phil Parkinson

Bolton are at the bottom of the league for a reason and are now the only team in the division to not win in the league this season.

Brentford fans have every right to celebrate, especially the 477 who made the trip to the north west.

Derby and Middlesbrough will provide sterner tests but, win either of them or even both, the whole table takes on a different meaning.

Despite just winning one game, the Bees are only eight points off a play-off place. That's how tight the division is.

Brilliant Barbet

Yoann Barbet at Chelsea

There's a time and a place for everything and Yoann Barbet picked the perfect time to mock his penalty miss against Norwich.

The Frenchman had blazed his spot kick miles over the bar, leading to jokes about where it ended up with it even reaching outer space.

And Barbet declared that his effort actually landed in the Bolton goal, replacing his free kick that put the Bees 1-0 up at the Macron Stadium.

He wrote on Twitter: “Get in!!! Finally we got the 3pts. Good team performance today. My ball from Tuesday finally landed. Thanks for your support again.”

Three points certainly has a way of making something that led to a lot of anger at the time funnier.
