BARNET are hoping that red tape will not scupper their efforts to sign Dutch striker Marciano Mengerink.

The Bees are eager to bolster their attack ahead of the start of the new season after transfer-listing Jon Nurse and last season’s top goalscorer Jake Hyde.

Mengerink was in fine form last season with the 23-year-old bagging an impressive 27 goals for Dutch amateur side SDV Barneveld.

But confusion is surrounding his future as the striker had agreed a deal to sign for Holland’s most successful amateur side IJsselmeervogels last December.

IJsselmeervogels are unhappy Mengerink has backtracked on his decision to join them and had threatened to take action against the player claiming a legal agreement was in place.

They have since signed Jodan Boys frontman Thomas Verheijdt leading to hopes that an accord might be reached that will allow Mengerink to sign for the Bees.

Mengerink has made clear his desire to join Edgar Davids’ (pictured) side this summer in a move which would see him reunited with former manager Dick Schreuder, now Head of Coaching at Barnet.

Barnet held trials for players from across Europe including Spain and Italy last week, and it is believed that Mengerink had been at The Hive over this period.

The Bees still hope to complete a move for the striker to give them added firepower ahead of the club’s start to life in the Conference Premier.
