Mark Warburton has revealed Brentford decided to offer Tony Craig a new contract after being impressed with the player’s attitude following a spell out of the side.

Craig put pen to paper on a new  deal at Griffin Park today, which will keep him at the Championship outfit until June 2017.

However, the Bees centre-half found himself out of the reckoning following his red card in the 1-1 draw with Birmingham back in August.

Happy days: Mark Warburton has been delighted with Tony Craig

Craig had to work hard on the training field to work his way back into the team.

And boss Warburton admits it was the ex-Millwall man’s approach to the game in those testing few weeks which finally the club him to extend a fresh offer to the 29-year-old.

He said: “Recently, following a red card against Birmingham, Tony suffered the disappointment of not being selected for four or five games.

Fury: Tony Craig remonstrates with the assistant referee at Millwall

“During this period he once again demonstrated his outstanding professionalism and he reacted by working even harder to force his way back in to the team.

“It was during this period that [Sporting Director] Frank McParland moved to offer him a new contract, which demonstrated our faith in his ability and character.”

Craig has clocked up more than 100 appearances for the Bees since his move from Millwall, who the Bees beat 3-2 on Saturday, two years ago.
