BEDFONT GREEN held a minute's silence at all six of their senior games on Saturday in memory of reserve team player Matthew Lyne, who passed away on Friday.

Brentford fan and Staines schoolboy Lyne, who only turned 17 in January, was diagnosed with leukaemia only four weeks ago.

Lyne played nine times for Bob Betts' AFC Bedfont Green side, and despite appearing mainly in goal, managed to score four times.

Club secretary Stewart Cook said: "Matthew was very popular around the Staines and Ashford area and was warmly known for his big heart, character and appetite. It's a tragic loss for everybody that knew him."

Bedfont Green's first-team paid the best-possible tribute to Lyne with a 4-1 win at Ash United which kept them top of the Combined Counties Premier.

Ash took an early lead from the penalty spot, but Green were level seven minutes later when Russell Miner tapped home the rebound from a Chris Henry shot.

Green were in the lead just three minutes later when Carl McLusky bagged his second in as many weeks, before Henry pulled back for Gavin Hart to strike a sweet third before the break.

And Henry got the goal his performance deserved with five minutes left when he latched onto a Craig White through-ball to chip the Ash keeper on the half-volley.

And Green extended their lead to eight points, but having played two games more than second-placed Epsom & Ewell, with a 2-0 win over Raynes Park Vale on Tuesday night.

Two goals in five second-half minutes from Henry and Hart inflicted Vale's first defeat of 2009.

Three second-half goals means the reserves stayed top of the Suburban League Northern Division too with a 3-0 win over Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Anil Arri, Junior OwusuAkonor and Zeon Thomas struck to make it 17 games unbeaten for the Green.
