Barnet’s Martin Allen has backed his team to bounce back with a first league win against Northampton Town tonight.

The Bees welcomed the Football League to the Hive for the first time in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers - their second defeat in as many matches.

But Allen is raring to go ahead of tonight’s clash as he looks to finally land a first win back in League Two.

“I’m not sure I see Northampton as a chance to ‘right the wrongs’ (of Saturday). You’ve got to keep believing in the players, you’ve got to keep supporting them, keep looking after them,” he said.

“Against Leyton Orient and Wycombe we had a lot of chances and didn’t take them. We’re making chances, we’re not taking them at the moment but the key thing is that we’re making chances and opening teams up."

The Bees boss added: “There’s no good having a go at them, they’re doing alright. It’s only a matter of time before the goals start to go in and we’re having a different conversation.”

The hosts’ profligacy in front of goal has cost them points in both matches, with Barnet seeing several clear-cut chances go begging.

And the players are also anxious to get their season up and running against Northampton, according to midfielder Tom Champion.

“Everyone is anxious to get them on the board. That’s the only thing, you can have back-to-back defeats at any point in the season, but obviously being the start of the season it affects you a little bit,” the 29-year-old said.

“You want to get off to a good start and get those first points on the board. It’s a long season, there’s loads of points to play for, and we know that if we keep doing what we’re doing we’ll win more games than we lose.”
